Don’t Lose Your Dental Benefits: A Year-End Planning Guide for Bay County Families

Your dental insurance resets on January 1, and whatever you have not used against your annual maximum by December 31 does not carry over. It disappears, even though you already paid for it through your monthly premium.

At Marina Pointe Dental, we see this happen every December. A patient comes in for one urgent issue and mentions, almost in passing, that they never scheduled the cleaning their plan covered, or that a crown they had been putting off is now a rushed decision before the year ends. A quick check of your remaining benefits now can prevent that.

What Resets on January 1

Most PPO dental plans run on a calendar year. Your annual maximum, the total amount your insurer will pay toward your care, drops back to zero on January 1 no matter how much you used. If your plan covered $1,000 and you only used $300, the remaining $700 is gone for good.

Your deductible resets too. If you already met it this year, finishing treatment before December 31 typically costs less out of pocket than starting fresh in January.

Why Coverage Goes Unused

Full use of a dental plan is less common than most people assume. A CareQuest Institute analysis found that 32 million U.S. adults exceeded their annual maximum in a recent year, and nearly half of those who reached that limit said it kept them from getting additional care they needed. Most patients are nowhere near using everything available to them, which means the real problem is coverage left unused, not coverage running out.

What to Check Before the Deadline

A few minutes reviewing your plan can save you real money before the year closes out:

  • Remaining maximum: Confirm how much coverage is left and when it expires
  • Preventive visits: Check whether you have used both cleanings most plans include each year
  • Deductible status: Ask whether you have already met it for this year
  • Pending treatment: Review any recommended procedure and ask if it can be completed before December 31
  • FSA deadlines: Look into whether a linked flexible spending account has its own year-end cutoff

A quick call to our office answers most of these questions in minutes.

Treatment Worth Scheduling Now

Some care gets put off because it does not feel urgent, even though it is exactly what your plan is designed to cover. A dental crown already recommended, a filling for a cavity caught at your last exam, or periodontal concerns flagged during a cleaning or exam are common examples of benefits that quietly expire unused. Larger cases, including dental implants, can sometimes be planned strategically across two benefit years, which is worth a direct conversation with our team.

December fills up fast once other families realize the same deadline applies to them, so checking in sooner gives you more scheduling options.

Marina Pointe Dental Is Ready to Help

We are a family-owned practice, and that has never meant cutting corners on technology or expertise. Our doctors bring real surgical training to implants, extractions, and restorative work, and we invest in the tools and continuing education that back that up. Being family-owned also means we take the time to understand each patient’s coverage directly, rather than pushing you through a call center to figure out what is left on your plan.

If you want to make the most of your remaining benefits this year, reach out through our contact form and we will help you get on the schedule before your coverage resets.
